COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION

RECLAIMING COMMUNITY ASSETS

Does your community have housing for its high-demand workforce? There is a dire need for workforce housing so businesses can fill open positions. Vacant or dilapidated properties hold opportunities for redevelopment!

Raising awareness of these underutilized assets captures residents' attention and brings about action. Through the Reclaiming Community Assets program, SCEDD will partner with local leadership to:

  • Create a map of underutilized assets;
  • Host a public meeting to share the results and discuss opportunities for redevelopment;
  • Facilitate community project meetings to create and implement a plan to transform properties from "Vacant to Vibrant"!

NUISANCE ABATEMENT

There’s a need in many communities for an unbiased assessment of properties, one that spotlights possible nuisance issues and prompts owners to spruce up their properties. The Nuisance Abatement Program answers this call by addressing concerns such as:

  • Unlicensed cars
  • White goods, tires and pallets in yards
  • Uncontrolled weeds, grass, trees, bushes
  • Houses with broken doors/windows
  • Outbuildings in disrepair

Nuisance/code enforcement is not only about making our communities healthier, safer, and more attractive for economic development, but also presents an opportunity to revitalize housing, something that’s desperately needed in our rural communities.

INVEST IN ACTION:

VACANT PROPERTY REGISTRY (VPR)

When incentives are ineffective, communities are not stuck - there is another tool to revitalize vacant properties.  VPR disincentivizes owner inaction by implementing an escalating fee structure.  Hiring SCEDD to manage VPR means unlocking underutilized properties to put into active housing inventory, boosting neighborhood safety, and fueling community pride.

The goal is to transform vacant, deteriorate properties into vibrant, development-ready spaces. Reduce long-term vacancies and declinging property values through proven strategies using VPR.
